Celebrating 65 Years of Impact in Ghana

As Ghana marks 65 years of the Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan, the contributions of Ghanaian alumni to the country’s socio-economic development are being celebrated. The Commonwealth Scholars and Fellows Alumni Association of Ghana (CoSFAG) have organised an event to highlight the achievements of its members in various fields, from academia to healthcare and beyond. The celebration shows the dedication of these individuals who have used their scholarship experiences to drive change in their communities.

The theme for this year’s global event is 65 Years of Global Impact: Empowering Commonwealth Change Leaders.

Our Story

The Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan began in 1960. Over 2000 Ghanaians have benefited from a Commonwealth Scholarship/ Fellowship. Upon completion and as part of their studies, these beneficiaries are expected to contribute to social and economic development priorities within the home country. Although these scholars and fellows have been serving in various sectors of national development with distinction and honor, there was no coordination of their valuable service to the country or management of their role as goodwill ambassadors of the UK. Also, there was no nationwide link among these alumni. This formed the basis for the establishment of the Commonwealth Scholars and Fellows Alumni Association of Ghana (CoSFAG. The aim was to bring together all Commonwealth Scholarship beneficiaries to initiate an Alumni Network in Ghana. Consequently, a reception for the Ghana CSFP alumni was held on 12 November 2014 at the British Council – Accra The first Core Group meeting was held on 9 January 2015. The Executive Committee members were elected on 10 July 2015 according to the Constitution of the Association. The Commonwealth Scholars & Fellows Alumni, Ghana (CoSFAG) was launched at
the British Council in Accra on 30th October 2015.

CoSFAG has engaged in several community impact projects over the years. The association has organized educational activities on climate change and food security concerns, as well as on Basic Life Support Training For SHS Students. We have also engaged tertiary students and educated them about how to apply for the Commonwealth Scholarships.

As part of the 65th year celebrations, we have put together a book which documents the differing but equally relevant contribution of CoSFAG members to Ghana’s socio-economic development. You will read about how different CoSFAG members came to the Scholarship award and how they have used their knowledge from the award to inform, direct, influence, or impact their various fields of work and education.
